ACCESS CHECKLIST: Building Liberated Spaces
access is a verb. not a box to check.
this checklist is a starting point—a reminder that our spaces can’t be revolutionary if they’re not accessible. it’s not about perfection, it’s about intention, accountability, and love.
use this when planning your next event, workshop, gathering, or creative project.
✶ print it, share it, adapt it ✶
BEFORE THE EVENT
- share access info clearly on all promo (entrance, bathrooms, seating, scent policy, etc.)
- offer multiple ways to attend (virtual option, recording, zine summary, etc.)
- include plain language descriptions and image alts in social media posts
- budget for accessibility (ASL, captions, transportation, etc. when possible)
- gather access needs from attendees (use RSVP forms or a contact email)
- choose a physically accessible venue (or explain limitations transparently)
DURING THE EVENT
- open with a land acknowledgement & access check-in
- stick to start/end times and allow for rest breaks
- have a quiet room or low-stim space available
- speak slowly, use a mic, and repeat audience questions
- make space for mobility devices and varied seating options
- ensure materials are readable (large print, plain fonts, high contrast)
AFTER THE EVENT
- invite feedback from disabled folks & integrate it moving forward
- pay or credit disabled consultants or co-organizers
- debrief with your team: what worked, what didn’t, what to do better next time
share a summary or recording with those who couldn’t attend
remember:
access isn’t something we do for people—it’s how we build with each other.
access is community care.
access is resistance.
access is joy.
